I might be a mom and the opposite of a fashionista, but I still wanna look good!
I am not an expert on fashion. I don’t wear designer labels or have the ability to go shopping all the time. Honestly, I spend 90% of the time in my house taking care of a toddler and I basically live in leggings and baggy sweaters.
However, from time to time I do have to leave the house and I want to look presentable. I always put comfort above all else since becoming a mother, but that doesn’t mean I want to walk around looking like I’m a homeless person! Which, by the way, is usually what I look like when I’m at home. Just being real here.
The thing is…I am probably not the only one! Actually, I know for a fact that I am not the only mama out there who doesn’t have many opportunities to wear knee-high boots and skin-tight dresses. Us mamas want to wear practical, comfortable, affordable outfits that are also cute! Right?!
So over the past year, I have figured out my 10 Favorite Mom Style Essentials! I decided to ditch the trendy stuff for the most part and stick to basic, classic pieces. Pieces that are interchangeable, easy to throw on, affordable, comfy and cute! The best part is that all these pieces can be dressed up or down, so you can be cozy at home or looking good out and about.
Leggings are one of those pieces of clothing that are great if you follow one very important rule. Always wear a long enough top to cover your front and back-end! As great as leggings are, you cannot wear them the same way you would wear jeans. Make sure your bits and pieces are covered up and you are in the clear! ( Maybe you can get away with it if you’re exercising and wearing thick leggings)
Another rule I like to follow for leggings is what I like to call the “Dress it up” rule. lol I just made that up. Anyway, when I wear leggings in my house, I’ll wear them with anything. Sweaters, tee’s, etc. However, if I want to wear leggings out, I try to always wear them with a more structured piece. For example, a cargo jacket.
Xhileration Women’s Sleep Pants // Yep. As I was looking up the link for my favorite leggings, I realized they were actually in the sleepwear section. But whatever! The reason I like them is that they are only 10 bucks, but still reasonably thick cotton. Plus they are semi-high waisted with a thick band, so they hold in my love handles really nicely! If they rip or get ruined in some way, they can easily be replaced. As much as I want some fancy Zella or Lululemon leggings, I can’t afford to buy them let alone replace them if motherhood and all it’s messiness gets a hold of them. So right now these leggings, or apparently sleep pants, are perfect!
Plush Rib-Knit Lounge Leggings // These super soft and comfy ribbed leggings are seriously my favorite pants ever. They are definitely more loungewear and less athletic looking than your average pair of leggings. But every time I wear them, someone asks where I got them because they are so great!

Joggers are my second favorite pant option. Like who doesn’t want to wear sweatpants all day? Just like with leggings I like to follow the “Dress it up” rule. If I can find cute joggers that I can dress up a bit and wear out, I will! I think the best way to dress up joggers is also with a structured jacket. A jean jacket would be a great option!
Gilligan & O’Malley Women’s Pajama Pants // Oh my gosh it happened again. Turns out my favorite joggers are also pajama pants. And once again, I don’t care! I have these in both the grey and black and I love them. I’ve worn them out in public many times with some slip-on sneakers and I swear they don’t look like pajamas. They are thinner, which is great if you live in a hot place like I do. They are also soooo soft. They are just that perfect slouchy relaxed jogger. I really love them.
Mid-Rise Sweater-Knit Joggers // These are not pajama pants people! I have these in a dark green color (which apparently doesn’t exist anymore) and love them. They come in a lot of different colors. The navy is super cute! They are thicker and longer than the ones I told you about above, but still super soft, comfy, and cute.

3. High Waisted Jeans
I am so glad high waisted jeans came back into style around the same time I became a mom! They are amazing for sucking in that muffin top and extra little tummy squish your baby was so kind to leave behind. Plus, they stay up better so you don’t have to constantly be pulling up your pants throughout the day. I was so convinced that high waisted jeans would not look good on me so I never even gave them a try. Then, one day I accidentally tried some on and I fell in love! If you are like me and are scared to try them, don’t be. Give them a chance and see what happens!
Stretch Ultra High-Rise Super Skinny Jeans // These are the jeans I accidentally tried on and loved. They are super affordable, but still great quality. They come in 5 different washes and I want every one of them.
Simone High-rise Super Skinny Jeans // These jeans are amazing and such great quality. They are so soft! They are stretchy while still being thick and they hold their shape great throughout the day. Honestly, they feel like hundred dollar jeans but are half the price. They apparently don’t carry the exact pair I have anymore, but I linked almost identical ones.

4. Baggy Tees & Tanks
I have never liked tight-fitting clothes, but after having a baby I really HATE tight fitting clothes. I’d rather go for that relaxed and casual fit that lets me still be able to eat a big breakfast and not worry that someone is going to ask me when I’m due. Plus, is there anything more classic and easy than a great t-shirt? I feel the same way about tank tops. I like when they are flowy and loose. Tee’s and tanks are so easy to dress up or down too!
Old Navy Luxe Tees and Tanks // My favorite tees and tanks by far are the Old Navy Luxe tees. They are made of this soft, heavy, bouncy fabric that is so perfect for layering but also wearing alone. I like to tuck the front of my tees into my pants and these tees are perfect for that. Because the fabric is so heavy and bouncy, it lays flat and doesn’t stick out to make your tummy look bigger than it is. I also love that they have so many options for necklines and sleeve lengths. Basically, any of the Old Navy Luxe tees are a win!

5. Light Weight Sweaters
I love every kind of sweater out there, but I’ve been really into lightweight sweaters these days. I love how you can layer a baggy tank underneath and look super cozy or tuck the front into some high waisted jeans and dress them up a bit. Another thing I love to do is put a white collared shirt underneath for a more preppy look. Lightweight sweaters go great with leggings, joggers, and high waisted jeans!
Plush Rib-Knit Pullover // I ordered this sweater/shirt online solely because it said plush and ribbed. Two of my favorite words when it comes to clothing. And I absolutely love it! I need it in every color. It is so cozy and you can wear it so many different ways. I’ll wear it with my joggers at home and with jeans when I go out.
Drop-Shoulder Pullover Sweater // This retailer apparently sold out of the exact sweater I have in black, but I found an almost identical one and I kinda love it even more than mine. It just looks so cozy and casual, but still classy.

I feel like flannels never really go out of style, which is one of the reasons I love them. However, I think in order to make them last you have to stick to two guidelines. One, stick to basic colors, like no purples or neon greens. And yes, I have seen some crazy colored flannels out there. Second, stick to basic button up flannels. For example, no weird sleeves or ruffles or anything crazy. Just good ‘ol plain flannels.
Old Navy Classic Flannel Shirt // Old Navy has the best plain classic flannels. No frills or crazy colors. They aren’t super thick either, which is great for those of us living in warmer climates.
Checked Cotton Shirt // I have a black and white flannel from this retailer that I love so much. It’s a little bit longer, so it’s great for that butt coverage if you need it. Also just perfect to throw on over a pair of jeans. They don’t sell my exact pattern anymore, but I found one that is very similar.

7. Cargo Jacket
Every mom needs a good cargo jacket or jean jacket in their closet. Remember when I was saying above that sometimes all you need to dress up a super casual outfit is a structured jacket? Well, they really come I handy. I have yet to find a jean jacket that I love the fit of, but I recently found a cargo jacket that I am obsessed with. The reason I think cargo jackets are so great for moms are the inherent tons of pockets! One for your phone, one for a pacifier, one for your keys, etc. They really come in handy when you’re short on hands! lol Get it?
Twill Field Jacket for Women // I have this jacket in the Teak It Away color and I love it! It comes in 6 more colors and honestly, they’re all amazing. And when I win the lotto I’m getting every color, because of dream big right?

8. Slip-on Sneakers
I think that basically, any sneaker is a mom-friendly shoe. However, slip-on sneakers are just that much easier to throw on, plus I love the look of them. You can literally wear them with everything. Leggings, joggers, jeans. If you’re really feeling adventurous you can even pair them with a maxi dress or something. The possibilities are endless.
Dr. Scholl’s Madison Slip-On Sneaker // Who would’ve thought Dr. Scholls had cute shoes? But they really do. I found my favorite slip-on sneakers at some random store and I was so surprised how much I loved them. The greatest thing about them is how comfortable they are! When you’re chasing a toddler around you need comfy shoes. I couldn’t find my exact pair, but the one I linked is almost identical.

9. Sandal Flats
I’m not sure if Sandal Flats is a technical term, but I think it works. I am talking about those kinds of shoes that are, well, half sandal half flat. I think they are great for if you want to wear sandals that look at bit nicer or dressier but still allow your feet to breath in warmer weather. You can pair them with jeans, dresses, shorts, really anything. I think they’re a great addition to any mamas shoe collection.
Lucky Brand Gallah Flat Sandal // I came across my favorite sandals on one of those Target shopping trips where you leave with everything in the store but what you went there for. This time I am grateful I grabbed these shoes because I wear them almost every day. I am so sad that Target apparently doesn’t sell them anymore because what am I going to do when they get worn out?! Luckily, for me and you, I found a very similar pair! And they call them a flat sandal!!!

10. Ankle Boots
I think every mama needs a good pair of ankle boots. It one of these easiest way to dress up a pair of jeans for going out. Most ankle boots have shorter heals so there are practical and comfortable as well. Just through on a pair of cuffed up jeans, a tee, a blazer, and some ankle boots and you’re ready for date night!
Journee Collection Link Bootie // I just recently had to throw away my brown suede ankle boots because I wore them out form wearing them so much. I still haven’t replaced them and I keep finding myself going to reach for them and being so mad they are not there. So I would definitely call ankle boots an essential! If you only go for one pair, I think going for a neutral brown or black is the best choice. But if you wanna go crazy, there are some super cute colored ankle boots out there!

I am throwing cardigans in as a bonus essential because 10 essentials sounded better than 11. lol But don’t underestimate the power of a good cardigan! Cardigans are something you can never have too many of and are so easy to through on a still look cute and presentable and of course, comfy!
One last tip:
Obviously, I am not a fashion blogger. I am just your average mom who wants to look cute and feel comfortable. So maybe I shouldn’t be passing out fashion advice. But I do have one last tip I want to share that has really helped me streamline my wardrobe recently.
Don’t be afraid of basics!
I am talking solid color tees, basic jeans, simple sweaters, etc. Basics should form the bulk of your wardrobe. Then you can add on top of that with more fun pieces or a great pair of shoes mixed in there. Having a solid collection of basics make getting dressed easy and quick. As a mom, you don’t have nor want to spend any more time than necessary dressing yourself for the day. So that’s my final tip. Embrace the basics!
